About Me
Photography is my most abiding pastime, I made a concerted start in 1986, with a battered Zenit EM. The aspiration to capture something of life’s authenticity and mystery has stayed with me all these years. I try to take pictures that do justice to the people, places and moments that are important in my life, but the joy and torment of analogue photography lies, for me, in the uncertainty of its result.
My day job is in the field of astrology and I keep an astrological journal when I have time. Currently I am writing a book on the Plutoid Orcus, which will be published in 2012.
I used to own a Canon 30D but I gave it to Alice recently, so some of the older pictures you will see on here are digital, but the majority of new shots are film only. Publishing of photos tends to be sporadic since it takes time and money to get the films processed, printed and scanned. I own and use various equipment:
- Canon Eos 5 (35mm)
- Canon Eos 100 (35mm)
- Canon A1 (beautiful, made in 1978 – 35mm)
- Zenit EM (the Russian brick – 35mm)
- Mamiya 645 (made in 1979 – medium format 6″x4.5″)
Insofar as lenses are concerned I mostly use Lensbaby tilt-shift with double optic glass, a Canon 24-70mm L series, a Sigma 35mm prime, the standard FD 50mm and a Sigma FD 24mm on the A1 and a Sekor 80mm on the Mamiya.
As for film, I experiment with various types. My current favourite is Fuji Neopan, and of course Fuji Velvia 50. I have several packs of Kodak TRI-X in the fridge and I like the fact that different stock changes the result in subtle ways. It is this precise uncertainty which has brought me back to analogue photography, for good I think.
I live in Norfolk, England with my partner Alice, her four boys (Humph, Artie, Wilf and Bert) and our son Teddy, who is my favourite subject, quite naturally!
My pictures are available to buy and if you’re interested, just send an email to let me know which you’re interested in. As a guide an 8″ x 10″ print will cost £25 GBP ($40USD) , including P&P to anywhere in the world (using the most expedient postal service option).
